What is a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip, creating a fuller, more defined appearance. It's effective for patients whose upper lip has lengthened with age, or for those born with a longer philtrum (the vertical groove between the nose and lips).
The incision is placed at the base of the nose within the natural contours of the skin, where the scar heals discreetly and fades significantly over time for the majority of patients. And because the result is structural rather than additive, it lasts in a way that fillers alone can't replicate.
The procedure is also relatively quick, and is typically performed under local anesthesia.
What Makes a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift
A lip lift works best for those who aren't happy with the appearance of their upper lip, whether it feels too long, too thin, or simply out of balance with the rest of the face. It's a concern that fillers can soften but never fully correct.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Notice your upper lip has lengthened or thinned with age
- Have a thin or flat upper lip that hasn't responded to fillers the way you’ve hoped
- Want a more defined, naturally fuller lip without ongoing maintenance
- Are in good general health, with realistic expectations about the outcome
The best way to know for sure is through a private consultation with Dr. Durand, where he will evaluate your goals and give an honest assessment of what a lip lift can achieve for you.
" Plastic surgery should enhance who you are - not change you. My goal is refined, natural results that respect your identity, anatomy, and individuality. " - Dr. Paul Durand, MD
What to Expect For Your Lip Lift
Before Surgery
Before your lip lift, you'll meet with Dr. Durand to discuss your goals and confirm that a lip lift is the right approach. In the days leading up to surgery, our team will send pre-operative instructions covering medications to avoid, how to prepare your home for recovery, and what to expect on the day itself.
The Procedure
Lip lifts are performed under local anesthesia in our state of the art facility at the Four Seasons Millenium Tower in Brickell. Dr. Durand begins by marking the treatment area with careful precision before administering anesthesia to ensure you're completely comfortable. He then removes a small, measured strip of skin from just beneath the nose, lifts the lip into its new position, and closes the incision with fine sutures. While the results can be dramatic, the procedure itself is relatively straightforward and only takes about an hour.
Recovery
Patients go home shortly after surgery and typically find recovery very manageable. Swelling is normal, peaking around days 3 to 4 before gradually resolving. Sutures are then removed within 5 to 7 days, and normal activities resume around 7 to 10 days.
During the first week, we recommend sticking to soft foods and avoid excessive talking, laughing, or wide mouth movements, all of which put unnecessary strain on the incision. Sun protection is also important throughout the healing process, as UV exposure can affect how the scar fades. With proper care, the incision heals discreetly over time, with scarring becoming virtually undetectable for most patients.
Final results are then visible as swelling fully resolves, typically within a few weeks, with the lip continuing to settle into its new shape over the following months.
