Every mommy makeover plan is built from the same set of procedures. Most patients combine two or three, but few need all of them.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
A tummy tuck removes loose abdominal skin and repairs separated abdominal muscles. Pregnancy stretches the linea alba, the connective tissue joining the two halves of the rectus abdominis, with the resulting separation called diastasis recti. It often narrows on its own over the first year. But when it doesn't, surgical repair is the only way to restore the abdominal wall. That repair is what flattens the profile.
Liposuction

What to Expect
The Procedure
A mommy makeover is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 3 to 6 hours, depending on which procedures are combined. Most patients go home the same day, though some cases warrant an overnight stay with monitoring. Dr. Durand generally begins with the abdomen, since tightening there changes the tension across the torso and affects how the breast work should be positioned.
You'll go home in a compression garment, and drains are common after abdominal work. Both come out at follow-up appointments over the first couple of weeks.
Recovery
The first week is the hardest. Expect soreness, swelling, and limited mobility, particularly if muscle repair was part of the tummy tuck, since that's the component that drives most of the early discomfort. You'll be walking the same day, bent slightly at the waist, and standing upright gradually over the following week or so.
Most patients return to desk work around 2 weeks. Strenuous activity, core work, and lifting should stay off the table considerably longer, usually 4 to 6 weeks.
The lifting restriction is the part worth planning around carefully. A toddler weighs well past the limit, and this is the single logistical problem that catches mommy makeover patients off guard. If you have small children at home, arranging help for the first 2 to 3 weeks matters more than almost anything else you'll do to prepare.
Results
Swelling takes 6 to 8 weeks to substantially resolve, and the abdomen is usually the last area to settle. Final results generally appear somewhere between 3 and 6 months, once tissue has softened and scars have begun to fade.
Results are long lasting, provided weight stays relatively stable and you've finished having children. A subsequent pregnancy can stretch the abdominal repair again.
Am I Ready for a Mommy Makeover?
Timing
Two questions determine whether now is the right time.
Are you finished having children? A subsequent pregnancy will stretch the abdominal repair and change the breasts again. That doesn't make surgery beforehand unsafe, and it won't affect a future pregnancy or delivery. It does mean you may be paying for a result you'll partly lose. Some women decide that trade is worth it and go ahead anyway. It's a reasonable choice as long as it's made with the trade-off in view.
Have your breasts stabilized after nursing? Breast tissue continues changing for months after you stop breastfeeding, and operating before it settles risks a result that shifts underneath you. Most surgeons want at least 6 months. Dr. Durand will assess where you are at your consultation rather than working from the calendar alone.
There's no minimum age and no window that closes. Women come in a year after their last child and women come in fifteen years after.
Candidacy
Beyond timing, you're likely a good candidate if:
- Your weight has been stable for several months and you're not planning significant loss.
- You don't smoke, or you're able to stop well in advance of surgery and stay off it through healing.
- You're in good general health, without uncontrolled diabetes, clotting disorders, or active infection.
- You have realistic expectations about what surgery can restore and what it can't.
Weight stability matters more than any particular number. Losing a significant amount after surgery will loosen skin that was just tightened, and gaining will do the same in the other direction.
Some women come in expecting to be told they need to lose weight first. Sometimes that's true, and Dr. Durand will say so plainly. Often it isn't, and the actual issue is loose skin and separated muscle that weight loss won’t correct.
