What Can Labiaplasty Improve?
For many women, enlarged or asymmetric labial tissue is a matter of genetics. For others, changes occur after life events like childbirth, or as they age. Regardless of the cause, labiaplasty can help improve:
- Discomfort during exercise: Excess labial tissue can cause significant irritation during workouts and physical activity.
- Pulling or twisting sensations: Elongated tissue may feel like it’s getting tugged or pinched during daily movement or sexual intimacy.
- Irritation in fitted clothing: Tighter clothes like swimsuits or leggings can cause discomfort.
- Asymmetry: It’s not uncommon for one side of the labia to be larger than the other or have a different shape.
- Self-consciousness: The appearance of excess tissue can cause some women to feel uncomfortable, especially in intimate settings or certain types of clothing.
- Changes due to childbirth and aging: Over time, the appearance and elasticity of labial tissue can be affected by pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes, and age.
What to Expect: Procedure, Recovery & Results
Procedure
Labiaplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity, and takes between 1 to 2 hours.
During your procedure, Dr. Durand will remove and reshape the excess tissue of your labia minora. He uses one of two techniques: trim or wedge. The trim technique gently removes excess tissue along the outer edge, leaving behind a smoother, more streamlined contour. The wedge technique preserves your natural labial edge while removing a wedge-shaped portion from the thickest part of the labia.
Dr. Durand will carefully determine the best technique for you based on your anatomy and desired outcome.
Recovery
Patients will experience swelling and mild discomfort for 1 to 2 weeks following surgery. It’s especially important to take it easy for the first 3 to 5 days, keeping the area clean and using cool compresses to manage swelling.
Most women can return to work and light daily activities within several days, but strenuous exercise, friction, tampon use, and sexual activity should be avoided for 6 weeks. Swelling will continue to go down over several weeks, with full healing of tissue taking a few months.
Results
Labiaplasty results are focused on relieving physical discomfort and creating an appearance that looks natural and proportionate to your body.
Scarring is minimal since incisions are hidden in the natural folds of your tissue, making it a discreet procedure with scars that are typically difficult to notice once healed.
Results are long-lasting, but natural aging and childbirth will affect the shape of your labia over time.
Who is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is highly individualized, but is generally considered an option for women who are unhappy with the size or shape of their labia minora.
You may be an ideal candidate if you:
- Experience chafing or twisting of the labia during daily activities or exercise
- Feel discomfort or pain during intercourse
- Are limited in what you can wear, either due to discomfort or concerns about appearance
- Have noticeable asymmetry
- Want natural-looking improvement focused on balance and your comfort
- Are in good overall health
Labiaplasty Q&A with Dr. Durand
Many women feel embarrassed to even book a consultation for labiaplasty. What would you say to them?
Dr. Durand: I would tell them they’re not alone and there’s nothing to feel self-conscious about, although I completely understand the sensitive nature of labiaplasty. To me, it's first and foremost a medical procedure, so I approach conversations from that angle to create a safe, judgement-free space for you to talk about your concerns. Once they’re in my office, most women feel relieved that they can finally discuss a solution with someone.
Will sensation change after labiaplasty?
Dr. Durand: This is the most common concern I hear. When performed correctly, labiaplasty should not permanently affect sensation because the techniques used are designed to preserve the underlying nerves and blood supply.
During healing, patients should expect temporary changes in sensitivity, but this returns to normal when swelling goes down completely. For some women, intimacy can become more enjoyable after surgery because we’ve addressed the physical discomfort and insecurities caused by excess labial tissue.
How much say do patients have in the final appearance?
Dr. Durand: A good surgeon listens to their patient's desires while also providing an expert opinion based on their experience. It’s all about trust with plastic surgery, and labiaplasty is no different. My surgical philosophy focuses on natural symmetry, and avoiding over-resection (removing too much tissue) is extremely important in labiaplasty. If I remove too much, patients can experience added discomfort or dryness.
My goal is to reduce the tissue just enough so it sits more comfortably within the labia majora (the outer lips). We want results that look natural to your body, leaving no obvious signs that surgery took place.
Why should certain patients consider labiaplasty?
Dr. Durand: Assuming they’re a good candidate, I would tell patients to consider labiaplasty because life’s too short to live with discomfort. I also think it’s important for women to know that there's a very wide range of natural labial anatomy, so wanting or needing a surgical solution does not make anyone abnormal. It may not be as dramatic of a transformation as some facial surgeries, but the results can still have a major impact on quality of life.
