What Can Breast Reduction Improve?
Breast reduction is both functional and cosmetic, and every patient's needs are uniquely their own. That said, common reasons patients come to Dr. Dev include:
- Neck, back, and shoulder discomfort: Heavier breasts can place constant strain on the upper body over time, leading to chronic pain.
- Shoulder grooving from bras: Many women develop deep indentations from their bra straps carrying excess weight throughout the day.
- Exercise and physical activity: Larger breasts can make high intensity workouts uncomfortable or even impossible.
- Skin irritation beneath the breasts: Moisture and friction beneath the breast fold can lead to irritation, itching, and rashes.
- Finding clothes that fit properly: If your breasts are much larger than the rest of your upper body, it can be hard to find clothes that fit well.
- Feeling disproportionate: Large breasts can overwhelm your natural frame and affect overall body balance and proportion.
- Body confidence: Some women may not enjoy the attention large breasts can bring, which can affect how they dress and carry themselves.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
Reduction mammoplasty is designed to reduce discomfort while also shaping breasts that look proportional and natural to your frame.
The benefits patients most often describe include:
- Reduced physical discomfort: Removing excess breast tissue can significantly reduce neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.
- Better mobility: Patients often feel more comfortable participating in physical activities, from running to yoga, without the discomfort or self-consciousness of excess breast weight.
- Improved body proportions: Dr. Dev reshapes the breasts to complement your overall frame and balance your silhouette.
- A youthful lift: A well-performed breast reduction repositions the breasts in a more youthful position on the chest.
- Long-lasting results: Aging, pregnancy, and weight changes will continue to affect your body naturally, but breast reduction results hold up well over time.
What to Expect: Procedure, Recovery & Results
Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on complexity.
Dr. Dev’s approach prioritizes both shape and long-term comfort. During surgery, he removes excess tissue, fat, and skin, then reshapes the breasts so they're smaller, lifted, and better proportioned to your frame. He'll also reposition the nipples and areolas to sit naturally on the new breast shape.
Recovery
Most patients experience soreness, swelling, tightness, and fatigue for one to two weeks following surgery. Dr. Dev encourages light activity (like walking) soon after surgery, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for a few weeks while the area fully heals.
You'll also wear a surgical bra for several weeks after the procedure to support healing. Swelling can take several months to fully resolve, after which the breasts settle into their final position.
Results
Patients feel the difference in weight almost immediately, though true pain relief tends to set in over the first few weeks as swelling subsides and you're off pain medication.
Once swelling fully resolves, the breasts will appear smaller, lifted, and better proportioned to your frame. Patients often tell us their posture improves, workouts get easier, and they finally feel comfortable in clothes that never worked before.
Results hold up well over time, though aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and weight changes will continue to affect breast shape.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?
No two patients or surgeries are the same, but breast reduction recipients tend to have similar concerns. You’re likely a good candidate if:
- You experience physical discomfort: You regularly deal with neck, shoulder, or back pain related to breast weight.
- You feel limited during exercise: Your breast size interferes with workouts, sports, or daily activities.
- You struggle with clothing fit: You have difficulty finding clothing or bras that fit or provide enough support.
- Your breasts are disproportionate to your frame: You feel overly heavy through the chest relative to the rest of your body.
- You want both functional and aesthetic improvements: Breast reduction can relieve discomfort while also improving breast shape and proportion.
- You have skin concerns: Many candidates suffer from painful or uncomfortable chafing and itching beneath their breasts that can be hard to manage with topical treatments.
- Your breasts are done developing: It’s recommended that patients wait until their breasts are fully developed to have reduction surgery, though exceptions can be made if the physical pain is severe.
Breast Reduction Q&A with Dr. Dev
How do your patients usually describe the change after surgery?
Dr. Dev: The word I hear most is “relief.” A lot of patients have dealt with the excess weight for a long time, and have become so used to it affecting their posture, exercise, clothing options, and confidence. Once that weight is gone, the physical discomfort decreases but daily activities also get easier in many ways, so there’s a mental benefit as well. It’s really rewarding when a patient tells me they can do things and wear things that they couldn’t before surgery.
Will I be able to choose my new cup size?
Dr. Dev: During your consultation, we’ll spend time talking about your goals, including your desired size. I’ll also evaluate your lifestyle, shoulder width, and overall frame to suggest a size that will not only relieve your physical pain, but look as natural as possible. Proportions are so important with breast reduction – we want your breasts to look like they always belonged to you.
Is it possible that I need a breast lift instead of a breast reduction? How do I know?
Dr. Dev: Both procedures involve repositioning the breasts, but the primary difference lies in volume. If you’re relatively happy with your current size but want to address sagging, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be a better option for you.
Breast reduction is more comprehensive and addresses both size and weight. It’s best for patients who feel their breasts are too large for their frame, potentially causing physical discomfort. We’ll discuss surgical options and my recommendation at your consultation, so you can make the best decision for your body.
